Construction firm hails CONEL students’ future job prospects

Construction firm Anderson Group has hailed the potential of students at The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London (CONEL) to have great careers in the industry.

The Chelmsford-based company has been working with the College since last summer to enhance the Construction curriculum by providing short courses, site visits and work placements.

Around a dozen students were recently presented with certificates after completing a CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) Cskills Awards Site Safety Plus course on Health and Safety Awareness delivered by Anderson.

The course covered potential hazards when working on site, practical advice on keeping yourself and colleagues safe and individual and employer responsibilities, including what to do if you think anyone’s health and safety is being put at risk.

On studying at CONEL, Level 2 Electrical Installation student Dupree Gray, 24, who attended the course, said: “I wanted to pick up a trade with the thought of one day working for myself. I find that very attractive as I have family already working in the business. The College has been great for me.”

Level 2 Plumbing student Miftar Murati, 18, added: “The teachers are very good. They help with revision and encourage us all in class, and so far this year I have passed all my exams with Merits and Distinctions.”

Anderson has been established for more than 30 years and has worked on a number of developments in North London and the northern Home Counties. The company’s current projects include the building of a new luxury player accommodation lodge at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club’s training ground in Enfield.

Students from the College have had the opportunity to visit the site to see construction professionals at work as part of a commitment with Enfield Council to encourage more young people into the industry.

Steve Hammond, Health and Safety Manager for Anderson and CITB Assessor, presented the certificates and congratulated the students.

He said: “The students were a pleasure to teach. They approached the course in a professional manner, were very engaged and enthusiastic to learn and asked relevant questions.

“If they’e keen to work and get the break, then then I am sure they will have great careers and go a long way in the industry.”
