Bradford College Construction Students Build on Site Trip

Construction students from Bradford College visited Barratt Homes’ St Andrew’s View development in Morley, Leeds, to gain valuable on-the-job experience outside of the classroom.

Students visited the site to see how their Level 2 Trades and Level 3 Professional / Technical courses will be put into practice, allowing them to understand the real life applications of their learnings.

Higher pathway students from the Construction Management and Civil Engineers programmes were offered an insight into quantity surveying and sustainability aspects of construction, giving them an enriched knowledge of the industry.

Barratt Homes has increasingly invested in training and education of young people in construction through college partnerships like this and its apprenticeship, graduate and sponsored degree programmes.

Bradford College’s Stephen Seymour, project lead for the ‘Centre of Excellence for the Built Environment’ program (CE:BE), said: “Site visits like this showcase exactly what career opportunities housebuilding can provide, for a wide variety of young people and particularly for those learners who are interested in pursuing the more professional technical pathways into the construction industry. 

“In order for the industry to thrive, it is important that skilled construction professionals support us in building top quality homes, while allowing the students to develop both their skills and underpinning job knowledge.

“Companies like Barratt Homes are an invaluable asset to the continued success of our programmes by adding real value to the current construction craft curriculums. Our Construction Management and Civil Engineers students are fortunate enough to have the unique opportunity to put their theoretical knowledge into a practical working context.”

Bradford College runs a host of construction-related courses from entry level and apprenticeships up to degree level.

Students can learn a range of construction crafts such as bricklaying, carpentry, plumbing, plastering and electrical engineering as well as civil engineering.  

Barratt’s also toured students from Carlton Bolling College around the St Andrew’s View site, which is a development of three and four bedroom homes in the market town of Morley.

The development benefits from excellent transport links via the M62 and public transport services, making the location ideal for commuters.
