Sport Students Teamed up With Nike, Waltham Forest and Local Schools for Work Placements

Leyton Orient Trust’s BTEC Sport students concluded their studies for the academic year with a triple whammy of work placements this month.

The Trust has been working with Waltham Forest College since 2010 to deliver BTEC Sport qualifications to 16-18 year olds each year.

As part of the Enrichment programme, students receive work placement and volunteering opportunities alongside their qualifications.

A total of 20 students planned, organised and delivered Sports related events as part of their work placement which included a Primary School Football Festival involving 10 local schools, an inclusive Sports Day at Peter May Sports Ground for adults with learning difficulties and a Community Launch event for Hackney Nike at the Score Centre.

The students organised, refereed fixtures, delivered skills sessions and awarded medals at the Primary School Footfall Festival. Pupils and staff were impressed with the relaxed atmosphere which promoted participation and enjoyment in sport.

They also worked closely alongside Waltham Forest Sports Development Team to deliver the inclusive sports day and Nike Sports Ambassadors and FUSE staff to ensure all the children had a positive experience at the Community Launch event.

BTEC Sport Student Emmanuel Akinmolodun, said: “We had a fantastic day with the staff from Nike and the school children and were able to put into practise the sessions we had learnt on the BTEC course.  It was also great to chat with the staff from Nike and find out about employment opportunities in their local stores.”

Course tutor Lloyd Boateng said, “It was a great experience for the students to work alongside Nike to put on a corporate responsibility event. They were really impressed with the International Coordinator for Nike’s enthusiasm and energy.”
