Farnham Media Student is ‘Highly Commended’ at this year’s BTEC Awards

A Farnham Sixth Form College Media BTEC student was recently nominated by her tutor for the BTEC Awards 2016.

The BTEC Awards are an annual ceremony designed to recognise and celebrate vocational excellence, and the winner receives £1,000 to take with them to university or start them off on their chosen career path.

Holly Mayes, 18, was nominated for the ‘Outstanding BTEC Media Student of the Year Award’ for her hard work in Media. Holly made it through to the final judging stage, along with 33 other students from across the country.

Although Holly didn’t win the overall award, she did receive one of the two ‘Highly Commended’ certificates from this category. Over 24,000 students study BTEC Media nationally and the BTEC Awards, commented, “This is a wonderful accomplishment and a great indication of the truly outstanding work Holly has completed”.

Lawrie Winn, Media Tutor at Farnham Sixth Form College, said, “Holly has worked with dedication, commitment and maturity for two years and is deserving of the highest praise. As well as her BTEC course, Holly has used her skills and expertise to mentor students doing other subjects and has produced many films for local companies and organisations. An OFSTED inspector said her work was of a professional quality and some of the best he’d seen from a sixth Form student. I am very proud of her accomplishment and it is worthy recognition for the excellence of her work.”

Holly said, “Media is something I love doing; producing and creating videos I’m very proud of. I was shocked, but very honoured, when my teacher Lawrie nominated me for the award. Getting so far in the competition again shocked me, but I am extremely proud. I’m glad they recognised my achievements and the effort and enthusiasm I have for my BTEC course.”
