Success for Cambridge Regional College football scholars

Cambridge Regional College’s Shadow Scholars have completed their most successful football season, finishing third in their respective leagues – and helping a second player on to a professional career.

The first and second year teams, run in partnership with Cambridge United, have been celebrating a series of successes over the season, with outstanding player Tom Knowles following Harry Darling to win a full scholarships with Cambridge United.

First squad striker Christopher (CJ) Lewis, who also plays for St Neots, has been accepted for a US scholarship at Bethany College and is off to Virginia this summer, while three players – Charlie Wolfe, Benito Castiglione and Tommy Horton – have become first team picks for Cambridge City over the year.

Sport lecturer Tom Hall, who heads the Shadow Scholars programme at CRC, said it had been a fantastic year.

“The standard of play has stepped up enormously with both squads getting some great results,” he said. “Both years ended the season in third place in their leagues – a fantastic result,” he said.

“The programme is going from strength to strength with wonderful opportunities opening up for the players. A lot of them have been offered places at university to study sports sciences, sports analysis, primary teaching and sports coaching, and some are going on to full-time jobs with Cambridge United.”

The Shadow Scholarship programme, which started with just 12 players four years ago, now has 16 in each of the two years and already has 18 signed up for the first

year squad starting in September. Students study for a BTEC in Sport alongside high-level football coaching.

To round off the season, the players are going to the European Championships in Paris next month, to watch a fixture and playing local friendlies.
