IT students at Cardiff and Vale College win Bae Coffi website design competition
A team of Level 3 IT students from Cardiff and Vale College have won a competition to design a website and app for the College’s café, Bae Coffi.
Students Bethan Thomas, Brandon Blake, James Gradkowski and Zoila Garcia Mancebo beat off the competition with their winning web and smart phone application designs, winning £300. The team at Bae Coffi will now explore coding the designs to make them a reality.
Bae Coffi is a commercial café business located in the College’s City Centre Campus on Dumballs Road. The high-end café offers speciality coffee and quality food sourced locally and also acts as an events venue and hub for the local community.
Students were presented with a ‘live employer’ brief; a means of giving learners opportunities for work experience by working towards a client-led brief on projects covering a variety of areas. The brief called for an innovative website and app that are visually appealing and user-friendly.
Both website and app have to help raise awareness of Bae Coffi’s brand profile and allow customers to engage with the coffee shop while keeping people up to date on the latest offers, events and promotions. When the website goes live the address will be www.baecoffi.co.uk .
CAVC Commercial Retail Manager Andy Ursell said: “As students are a key customer base for us, we thought that it would be ideal to have them come up with designs for the website and app. It helps us to understand and meet our customers’ expectations, while also giving students the opportunity to work to a real design brief for a real employer.
“We were really impressed by the quality of work that was put forward – and especially by the designs submitted by Bethan, Brandon, James and Zoila. We look forward to making their ideas a reality for Bae Coffi.”
The competition was supported by the College’s B#Epic employability and enrichment team. CAVC Employability and Progression Advisor Shane Colhoun said: “I would like to thanks our Commercial Retail Manager, Andy Ursell, for providing our IT learners with the opportunity to apply their IT expertise on a real business brief at Bae Coffi. I would also like to thank our winning team for all their hard work in making this project so successful.”
