Outstanding student shortlisted for national award
A Cambridge Regional College engineering student has been shortlisted for a national BTEC award after beating 800 other students to reach the final.
Leigh Sessions, 31, who studies mechanical engineering and is president of the college’s Students’ Union, has made it through to the final judging panel for the BTEC Adult Learner of the Year award.
He was nominated by CRC head of engineering Naomi Larner, who said he was an outstanding student and a role model for his peers, highly committed to his studies and to helping the college’s wider community.
Leigh, who has two young children, said he was honoured to be in the finals of the award. He joined the college after leaving the army, and works full time at night to support his family, as well as studying for his BTEC Level 3 qualification. He is also a student governor on the college’s corporation, which is responsible for the finances and management of the college.
In the Army he saw active duty in Iraq, Northern Ireland and Afghanistan and served as a Bombardier in the Royal Artillery, equivalent to the Infantry rank of Corporal – showing leadership in the toughest of conditions.
The award finalists will be judged by a panel of industry experts, and the winners will be announced at a gala celebration evening in July.
