National Tutoring Programme: “The government’s flagship recovery programme is currently sleep-walking into catastrophe, letting down a generation of children who have been scarred by the pandemic”

Commenting on the Government’s National Tutoring Programme, Lee Elliot Major, Professor of Social Mobility at the University of Exeter, said:

“The Government’s flagship recovery programme is currently sleep-walking into catastrophe, letting down a generation of children who have been scarred by the pandemic. Too many teachers remain either unclear or unconvinced by the benefits of the national tutoring programme. Far too few pupils are being helped, and too little is being done to scrutinise the programme’s impact. 

“An urgent review is required to avert a failure that will damage the prospects of 100,000s of pupils, particularly those from poorer backgrounds, many of whom have suffered severe learning loss. It will be a huge blow to social mobility.”
