St Mary’s drama students put women of war centre stage
Drama students at St Mary’s Sixth Form have given voices to women whose lives were affected by the Second World War, by writing and performing a thought-provoking play to highlight their often-overlooked plight. The play has been released online today to mark Remembrance Day (11th November).
Remembrance Day is a time for reflection on the Armed Forces, their families, the emergency services and those who have lost their lives as a result of conflict or terrorism. Historically, the role women play during wars has received less attention. This is what inspired three Sixth Form drama students at St Mary’s to write and perform ‘Land Girls’. The play explores how women’s lives were transformed by the Second World War.
Based on historical research that the students carried out themselves, the play is a moving tale of three young women from vastly different backgrounds and circumstances (a farm, a city and high society). The women learn to work together to support the war effort and go on to form life-long friendships. The production was complemented by a beautifully crafted set, designed by the students, and constructed by St Mary’s talented theatre technician, Joe Nicholson.
Head of Drama at St Mary’s School, Ms Roberts said:
“We are so incredibly proud of the girls and their stunning original production.”
The play was originally performed in front of a small, socially distanced audience of peers and teachers as part of the girls’ A Level exams. The three girls now have their final grades and they each earned well deserved A*s for their work.
