Belfast Metropolitan College joins 157 Group
The largest FE and HE college in Northern Ireland has become the 29th member of the 157 Group education association.
Belfast Metropolitan College, which is also the sixth largest college in the UK, is 157 Group’s first member college outside England.
157 Group executive director Lynne Sedgmore said the role the college has played in shaping the social, economic and industrial history of the city of Belfast made it an ideal candidate for the organisation, which aims to bring together principals of large successful colleges to play a greater role in policymaking.
She said: “Its strong focus on enhancing learners’ employability and work-readiness is underpinned by close collaboration with industry to keep abreast of needs and developments, and we look forward to Belfast Met’s contributions to the 157 Group’s discourse about employer engagement and the value of local partnerships.”
Marie-Thérèse McGivern, principal and chief executive of Belfast Metropolitan College, said: “We aspire to be a college that has a significant impact on the people and communities we serve, with the learner at the centre of everything we do. As a new member of the 157 Group, we look forward to sharing our experience of and commitment to excellent teaching, learning and support, aimed at ensuring successful futures for all our learners.”
The move comes just a month after West Midlands-based Walsall College became the organisation’s 28th member.
