Barton Peveril’s Budding Young Authors
Barton Peveril Sixth Form College (@bartonpeveril) students are turning their passion for literature into a profession, after joining the Crow’s Nest Creative Writers group headed by ArtfulScribe and Mayflower Engage.
Crow’s Nest Creative Writers is a regular creative writing group based at MAST Mayflower Studios that will help the students involved develop skills, confidence and experience for their craft.
Participants will explore creative writing through workshops on topics like characterisation, dialogue, setting and plot, as well as through practical exercises. Writers will work across genres including non-fiction, fiction, poetry and script-writing.
The Barton Peveril students signed up to the group after learning about it through the English Extension enrichment activity at the Hampshire-based College, led by Subject Leader for English Literature Tom Voaden. English Extension gives students the opportunity to explore works of literature not studied on the syllabus so that students can broaden their literary horizons outside of the classroom.
Speaking on his students’ participation, Tom Voaden said:
‘We are delighted that so many English Extension students have taken up this amazing opportunity to workshop their Creative Writing skills. It’s been a tremendously popular experience for our aspirational writers who are likely to pursue English Literature at University.’
Student Anna Balson, who previously attended Noadswood School, praised the weekly writing group:
‘This kind of group is a really good way to get inspiration for personal writing as the group discusses how we used the prompts and ideas to influence our own writing styles. Every week I find it easier to write based off the ideas presented and I am getting more confident in my own work.’
