A world of opportunities for BCoT students after Turing Scheme success

Basingstoke College of Technology (@BCoT) has been named as one of the successful FE colleges in securing funding from the #TuringScheme – the UK’s global programme to study abroad.

The College was one of 110 successful applicants from 142 applications, and the only FE provider in the region to have received funding for 2021/22.

As a result of this funding we will be able to send students from a wide range of subject areas at the College to immerse themselves in industries across Europe. The students participating in this scheme will gain invaluable ‘real world’ work experience to enhance their subject knowledge and also have the opportunity to broaden their horizons with this life-changing cultural programme.

Alexis Smith, Assistant Principal for Foundation Learning and Student Voice at BCoT, said:

“This is great news for our students who will have access to some amazing experiences to set them up for their future careers. An example of one of the projects we have planned is a trip to Spain for our construction students to learn traditional Spanish tiling. We hope to open this opportunity up to as many of our subject areas and students as possible.”

The Turing Scheme is the UK government’s scheme to provide funding for international opportunities in education and training across the world. It supports Global Britain by providing an opportunity for UK organisations from the higher education, further education, vocational education and training and schools sectors to offer their students, learners and pupils life-changing experiences to study or work abroad.

More than 40,000 students, learners and pupils are set to experience study and work around the world during the 2021-22 academic year after almost £100 million of funding was approved in the inaugural Turing Scheme call for proposals.

A total of 363 applications from universities, schools and further education and training providers across the United Kingdom were approved from 412 applications received by the Turing Scheme Delivery Partner, a consortium of the British Council and Ecorys UK. There were 110 approved applications in FE and the total funding for FE colleges in England was over £19,000.

As part of the new global scheme, Canada, Japan and the United States are among more than 150 international destinations where UK participants will be funded to take up placements – with 48% of places going to those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
