Education ministers to give evidence to Youth Unemployment Committee

Tomorrow, Tuesday 13 July 2021, the House of Lords Youth Unemployment Committee will be taking evidence from two ministers from the Department for Education (@EducationGovUK).

At 10.15am the committee will hear from:

• The Rt Hon. Nick Gibb MP – Minister for School Standards, Department for Education.

At 11.30am the committee will hear from:

• Gillian Keegan MP – Minister for Apprenticeships and Skills, Department for Education.

These evidence sessions will be held remotely and streamed on Parliament TV.

Topics the committee is likely to cover include:

• The role of the national curriculum in preparing young people to be successful in the modern labour market, including providing the technical education needed for T Levels and apprenticeships.
• The impact of the EBacc on the subjects offered to young people today.
• The purpose and impacts of national testing at 16.
• Whether examinations alone are the best way to assess whether young people are ready for adult life and the workplace, and what other options are available.
• The effectiveness of current policies to reduce NEET (not in education, employment or training) rates and what other options could be considered.
• How to encourage employers to increase their apprenticeship provision for people under 25.

Recently the committee took evidence from Sean Harford HMI, National Director for Education, Ofsted; Jason Arday, Trustee, Runnymede Trust; Dr Gurleen Popli, Senior Economics Lecturer, University of Sheffield.
