A Barking & Dagenham College (@barkingcollege) design student Leo Sortiri has been awarded for his innovative packaging design.

The Starpack Students competition aims to excite the next generation into thinking of packaging as a career. The Annual Starpack Students Awards recognise talent amongst young and upcoming designers.

Leo’s ‘TidyGUY’ design was packaging for a grooming product made from aluminium; that may seem unusual, but in fact aluminium is a very ‘green’ packaging choice, as Leo explains: “One of aluminium’s greatest properties is its recyclability, this makes it one of the most environmentally friendly metals, as its mass production and easy recycling process helps in the reduction of fossil fuel gasses polluting the environment.”

Aluminium packaging has historically been used in the food and drink industry and in recent years new developments have pioneered its application in new sectors including the beauty and personal care sector. Students were briefed to come up with creating an exciting new personal grooming brand for men or women with sustainability as a core brand value.

Leo, who studies 3D design the College, attended a virtual ceremony on Thursday 24th June, along with his proud tutor Bella Parenti and his family. Leo was thrilled when he heard he had won the Bronze prize in the aluminium packaging category: “It is my first year at the college, so I was really happy that I won an award.

“I have another year of my course to do, then I want to use the skills I have learnt on my 3D Design BTEC to secure a place to study furniture design at university.”
