Which policies could prevent young people from becoming unemployed?

On Tuesday 15 June 2021 the House of Lords #YouthUnemployment Committee (@LordsYouthUnemp) will hold two evidence sessions which will be held remotely and streamed on Parliament TV.

At 10.15am the committee will hear from:

• Stephen Evans – Chief Executive, Learning and Work Institute
• Tony Wilson – Institute Director, Institute for Employment Studies.

At 11.15am the committee will hear from:

• Professor Ewart Keep – Professor Emeritus, University of Oxford
• Professor Sandra McNally – Professor of Economics, University of Surrey.

The topics the committee is likely to cover include:

• How long it could take for youth employment to return to pre-pandemic levels.
• Particular groups of young people that may be economically scarred due to the pandemic.
• What policies may prove effective in the longer term in encouraging employers to take on young people and equipping young people with the right skills for work
• The effectiveness of the Government’s education proposals set out in the Skills and Post-16 Education Bill.
• The extent to which young people’s education choices at age 16 are shaped by factors including socioeconomic background and gender.
• How employment and pay outcomes vary between young people who follow the academic path and those who pursue technical or vocational qualifications
• Potential reforms to apprenticeship policy that could increase the number and the quality of apprenticeships.

Last week the committee took evidence from Steve Rotheram, Metro Mayor, Liverpool City Region Combined Authority; Michelle Rainbow, Skills Director, North East Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP); and Meredith Teasdale, Strategic Director of Together for Families, Cornwall Council.
