From education to employment

Christmas day learndirect learners surge 144% in five-years

The number of people logging on to online training provider learndirect to improve their skills on Christmas day has increased by 144% in five years.

According to figures published today by learndirect, 765 people from across England and Wales logged in on 25 December, up from 695 in 2010, and 314 in 2006.

“The increase in Christmas day learners shows how keen people are to improve their skills and work towards a brighter 2012,” said Colin McDonald, head of service offer and marketing at learndirect.

“Gaining qualifications can help get people get back into work and give them a much needed confidence boost which will help improve their employment prospects. It can also support businesses which are crying out for skilled workers.”

Back in September, learndirect published its Work Confident Report, which showed that 70% of unemployed people feel trapped in their seemingly endless job hunt cycle, with 96% feeling there are no available jobs for their current skill set.
